Cabbage dishes, especially hearty, warming soups, are particularly welcome during the colder months. Yet even this reliable kitchen companion has its limitations.
When cabbage might not be the best choice:
1. People with thyroid problems:
Think of the thyroid as your body’s internal conductor, guiding essential processes. Cabbage contains a compound called goitrin, which can disrupt this delicate balance by contributing to thyroid enlargement.
If you have thyroid problems, including goiter, consume cabbage with caution. Want to eat it regularly? Soaking the leaves in salt water for 10 to 15 minutes and chopping them finely may help reduce goitrin levels.
2. People with digestive sensitivities:
Cabbage’s high fiber content makes it an excellent food for stimulating bowel movements. However, in people with gastrointestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome or persistent diarrhea, it may worsen symptoms and cause discomfort.
