For the French Onion Soup Mixture:
2 tablespoons butter
2 large onions, thinly sliced
1 teaspoon sugar
1 cup beef broth
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
Salt and pepper to taste
For the Topping:
1 1/2 cups Swiss cheese, shredded (or Gruyère for a more traditional French flavor)
Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the French Onion Soup Mixture:
In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
Add the sliced onions and sugar. Stir occasionally and cook until the onions are soft and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
