What your stomach is trying to tell you

Stomach pain, that familiar stomach ache, is something almost everyone experiences at some point in their lives. Sometimes it’s mild and fleeting, disappearing after a few hours. Other times, it’s constant, sharp, or so intense that it disrupts our daily routine. While stomach pain is usually harmless, it can also be our body’s way of telling us that something more serious is happening inside.

Let’s look at what abdominal pain really means, what can cause it depending on where it occurs, and when you should seek medical attention.

What is abdominal pain?
Abdominal pain is any discomfort, pain, or cramping between the chest and pelvis. This area contains many vital organs, such as the stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, and parts of the reproductive system, so the causes can be quite varied.

The pain can be felt:

Sharp or stabbing, as in gallstones or appendicitis.

Dull or persistent pain, such as bloating or constipation.

Cramps, often related to gas or menstrual cramps.

Wavy, which may present with intestinal obstruction or intestinal spasms.

Most stomach aches are related to something relatively minor, such as indigestion, gas, or overeating. However, persistent or severe pain may indicate a medical problem that requires proper evaluation.
