Alert in Europe: the reappearance of a known virus worries scientists.
In detail, and according to aggregated data published by the ECDC, the first European country to detect a locally transmitted case was Spain , on October 10. Just seven days later, two more locally transmitted cases were detected in the Netherlands and Portugal , while the same occurred in Italy , where authorities reported two confirmed cases.
In light of this data, the scientists at the Center point out in the same statement that the five new cases differ from the imported cases recently recorded (between August 2024 and October 2025), as they are not travelers from countries where the Mpox virus strain 1b is endemic. However, they are also not individuals who have been in contact with infected travelers.
