Many men may experience an enlarged prostate, a condition also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This gland, which surrounds the small tube below the bladder, can swell with age, disrupting urine flow and potentially developing into cancer.
Causes of prostate enlargement
The prostate gland is influenced by various hormones, the main one being testosterone. This hormone, through the action of a specific enzyme, is converted into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a more potent form of testosterone. Although testosterone and DHT levels decrease with age, the activity of this enzyme increases, leading to prostate enlargement.
