What is a stroke and why is it so dangerous?

A  stroke  , commonly known as a brain hemorrhage, occurs when there is an interruption in blood flow to the brain, depriving brain cells of oxygen and nutrients. When this happens, cells begin to die rapidly, causing damage that can be irreversible without immediate intervention. There are two main types of stroke:  ischemic  , caused by a blockage in blood flow, and  hemorrhagic  , caused by the rupture of a blood vessel in the brain.

The 12 main symptoms of a stroke

1. Sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body.

One of the most common signs of a stroke is  sudden weakness  or  paralysis  on one side of the body, especially the arm, leg, or face. If you notice someone unable to lift one arm or smiling unevenly, it’s a serious warning sign.

2. Difficulty speaking or understanding

Difficulty  speaking clearly  or understanding what is being said is another sign of a stroke. The person may stutter, use disjointed words, or be unable to form simple sentences.

3. Sudden mental confusion

Sudden confusion for no apparent reason could be a symptom that the brain is not receiving enough oxygen. The person may appear disoriented or have difficulty making simple decisions.
